Appleton Learning Challenges High School Juniors and Seniors To Improve Their ACT Score To Win

Announces $5,000 Appleton Hometown Scholarship for Madison County Students

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (Oct. 17, 2011) – Research shows that only 57 percent of students who take the ACT more than once will increase their composite score on the test.  Focused on changing the way Americans learn, Appleton Learning, a private education organization that provides individualized tutoring, test preparation, academic testing and assessments for students of all ages, announces a scholarship program to encourage junior and senior high school students to challenge that stat and improve their ACT scores as much as possible.

The inaugural Appleton Hometown Scholarship will award one $5,000 scholarship to a Madison County student to aid in their higher education. Students who increase their ACT score from their first test to their final test are eligible, and are invited to submit an application. Students must include an official high school transcript and copy of their ACT test scores to be considered.  The winner will be chosen based on the total increase of their score and applications must be received by March 12, 2012.  The  potential winner will be  announced in May 2012.  Should there be a tie; finalists will be asked to submit a short essay to determine the winner.

“At Appleton we believe that most students rarely attain their full potential academically, and we are focused on changing that.  This scholarship is a challenge to Madison County students to increase their ACT scores as much as possible…and thereby increase their chances of college success,” explains Glenn Clayton, CEO of Appleton Learning.

Donna Clark, Guidance Coordinator for Huntsville City Schools adds, “Students should take the ACT once in their junior year (no later than spring) and then again in their senior year of high school. This is because many students improve the second time around.”  Clark, a former high school counselor, encourages students to take both the SAT and ACT to give them more opportunities and options for obtaining a good score.

In small group settings, Appleton Learning provides test preparation to students through a thorough review of content covered on the ACT or SAT.  Students enrolled at Appleton take two full-length practice tests and receive individualized coaching recommendations tailored to improving these test scores. Appleton also offers one-on-one test prep tutoring.

Clayton continues, “Often students underestimate the value of ACT prep, but we have found that if students know and understand the format and question types before hand, confidence and improved test scores follow. On average, students who go through our test preparation course increase their score by 3-6 points on the retest.”
